17-09-13' Year 2 starts

I'm an UOL year 2 student now, though I feel very much like a freshmen.

I will be working harder this year. *fingers crossed

I did my first magazine subscription to CLEO. The mag is amazing, hitting the all the right notes on the self-help, e.g the difference between introvert and unsociable.

This month there is an article about depression and sad which I'd like to share.

The researchers from the University of California discovered a particular gene - the oxytocin receptor gene - affects our levels of optimism and self-esteem. According to the study, if you are missing certain nucleotides (the building blocks of DNA) at specific location on the gene, you are likely to look at situations in a bleaker manner, have lower self-esteem, and show significantly higher levels of depressive symptoms. This suggests people with this 'sad gene' have a more pessimistic outlook on life and are generally more likely to react negatively to situations.

Heritability accounts for 40% of depression.

There are 2 sub-types of depression, neurotic depression and melancholic depression with the latter to be more associated with genetics.

Neurotic depression - people can continue to work and function and when happy things happen, they can still respond. However, they tend to have unstable personality structures, and may be anxious, and have a but of a perfectionist streak. They feel better in the morning, and as the day goes by, when they met with disappointments, they feel worse and worse.

I feel strongly affiliated to this category. Crossing reference to my family, I'd probably gotten my 'sad genes' from my dad.
